I have a book called the Guide to America's 100 Best Trout Streams. Several (more than two) are listed that are less than an hour from my house and maybe a dozen are within a two hour radius. I can walk to a crystal clear spring creek and catch trout (some native and wild) that are longer than the shallow water is deep. Still, it's never felt quite right here. When one wants to fish for trout, one looks west. If one wants to fish in the ocean, one looks south. Even with a dozen or more day trips to 'blue ribbon' rivers and the famed Long Island Sound right here with its healthy stripers, bonito, and other saltwater beasts, this just doesn't feel like the destination some try to make it be.
So, we try and make the best of it. We tell ourselves we don't fish to catch fish but to be out there in nature - so long as we're casting and all...that we like the subtlety of little native brookies...that bluegills on poppers from a canoe full of cans of beer are fun...that largemouth bass are America's first fish and so unfortunately overlooked by fly fishermen...that carp are God's gift to the future of extreme fly fishing - the next bonefish...
In any case, here's to trying to make it work.
